WELLINGTON Phoenix and Adelaide United’s first A-League game of the season ended in a 1-1 draw after early goals to two superstars on their debuts.
Dario Vidosic made a dream start to his first Phoenix A-League game when the former Socceroo scored a header past Paul Izzo after five minutes.
However, new Reds import Johan Absalonsen matched Vidosic’s effort with his own header less than five minutes later to equalise.
Phoenix almost gifted Adelaide a second goal on the 30-minute mark when a miscommunication between Wellington debutants - veteran Ali Abbas and 18-year-old Keegan Smith - almost saw Nikola Mileusnic score into an open goal.
But Smith almost made a heroic point-blank save from George Blackwood’s header in the 76th minute to stop Adelaide from taking the lead.
New Adelaide star Karim Matmour had a golden chance to win the match for the Reds in the third minute of stoppage time, but his header from a metre out went over the goal.
