The University of Canberra Firebirds have claimed their first piece of silverware for the year after a hard-fought win against the Centurions at Greenway Oval on Saturday.
The Firebirds secured top spot with a 42-20 win despite having two games remaining in the season. Running back James Thornhill opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a bulldozing run down the middle, knocking several defenders over on the way to the end zone.
The Centurions answered back with a touchdown of their own to make it 7-6 early in the second. But from then on the Firebirds were relentless and led 21-6 at the main break before Thornill added his third and fourth touchdowns to take his tally to 20 this season.
The ACT women's side, the Diamonds, also played their first home game of the NSW competition and they put on a clinic against the Northern Sydney Rebels, cruising to a 23-8 win.
Saturday: Spears v Firebirds at 11am, Diamonds v Lions at 2pm, at Greenway Oval.
