To mark their 25th wedding anniversary, Lisa Wilkinson and Peter FitzSimons got hitched ... again.

Family, friends and colleagues believed they were invited to celebrate their anniversary dinner, but when they turned up they were surprised by a wedding.

The Today show host, 52, and The Sydney Morning Herald columnist, 56, chose The Bathers' Pavilion at Balmoral Beach to renew their vows on Saturday - the same spot where they were first married a quarter of a century before.

"We just got married ... again," Wilkinson wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of the beaming newlyweds.

The bride wore an off-the-shoulder Pallas Couture gown - the same dress she wore to the Logies two years ago that prompted FitzSimons to propose again.

Well-known guests included Wilkinson's Today show colleague, Sylvia Jeffreys and her husband Peter Stefanovic, Ben Fordham and his wife Jodie Speers, Richard Wilkins, Mia Freedman, Georgie Gardner, Tony Jones, Andrew Denton, Billy Birmingham, Leigh Sales, Julia Baird, Mike Carlton, and former Herald editor Mark Scott and his wife Briony.

A Current Affair's Steve Marshall acted as the celebrant, while it's believed Wilkinson's co-host Karl Stefanovic missed out on the celebration as he is away with girlfriend, Jasmine Yarbrough.

FitzSimons told Fairfax Media that the speeches from their son Jake and daughter Billi "blew the night away".

While the former rugby union great and prolific storyteller drew a few laughs at the reception with his own words: "You are the people we want to grow with, at least you are the people I want to grow old with, of course Lisa will always be 42."

Set up by 60 Minutes reporter Liz Hayes, the high-profile couple were engaged three months later.

They were married six months later in 1992 and had a baby on the way within three months of their wedding day; the first of three children.

"We didn't muck around and it just felt right. It didn't feel hard," FitzSimons told Mia Freedman during an interview for her podcast No Filter last year.

Speaking about their marriage, he added: "We have 50 blissful days. 300 pretty good days. And 15 shockers. But as we've got older … 15 shockers are now down to three shockers [a year].

"A good relationship has to be like peeling an onion. You never want to get to the centre of the onion and understand this person ... I still don't understand this person," he said, with a laugh.
