Jockey Craig Williams is chasing the Melbourne Cup to complete the grand slam of Australian racing and, as he is legged on Youngstar on Tuesday, he will feel strong even at the light 51.5kg handicap.
Williams is blessed with the ability to get to the low limits and has stripped down to 50kg to ride three-year-old Oohood in the Empire Rose Stakes on Saturday. It means Youngstar’s weight will not be a challenge; in fact he will have the luxury of meat in the lead-up.
“I got down early to 50kg, so my body is used to the weight and you can be strong,” Williams said. “It will make riding 51.5kg in the Cup a bit unusual. Usually when you are riding 51.5kg you are dropping to get there but after Saturday I will be putting weight on, so I’ll feel very strong.
“I will be able to go out and have some meat whereas usually at this time of year I would be having seafood, vegetables and salad.
