PRISONS bosses are due to hold crisis talks today after a shocking video was posted online from inside a maximum security cell at Sydney’s Parklea Correctional Centre.
Corrective Services NSW said they are meeting with the operator of Parklea, the privately owned GEO Group to “discuss security and safety concerns”.
They said an investigation was launched immediately the video, uploaded on June 29, came to their attention and four mobile phones and chargers, steroid tablets and a number of other contraband items were seized from maximum security cells yesterday.
In the video the prisoner called “Nick” claims prison officers smuggle in mobile phones for money.
“On a day-to-day basis this place is a deadset joke. OK, it’s a deadset joke. Right now in my cell I have a mobile phone. Why have I got a mobile phone? It’s because screws bring mobile phones in to the jail for money.
The prisoner continues to question why he can film what is clearly contraband in a jail cell.
“Now why am I carrying around a knife like that? Why does that need to be in my hand at this point of time.
“OK. Why do I need to slash people? Do I need to show you the slash marks on the wall (slashes wall)? That’s just an example of what it can do to your throat. OK. That’s a slasher.”
The prisoner continues to hold up various items of contraband including a metal bar which he says has come off a television.
He then holds up a small plastic bag which he claims contains the drug ‘ice’.
“Why have I got it? Because I can. OK now. What’s this for? I don’t know maybe I might hide the f***ing phone in there. Good idea.
“This jail is ruining lives. It is killing young people, the young generation of this place is deadset terrorised. Now look at this man (pans to face of cellmate). 50 years of jail. Why haven’t the system fixed him?
“Why is he still back? OK, you know I’m going to tell you why he’s back. Because the system has never had a mobile phone broadcast live inside of every correctional centre.”
A Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said the video was a “very serious breach”.
“CSNSW closely monitors operations at all of its prisons and immediately launched a multi-team investigation.”
“Any suggestions that contraband is introduced by staff are immediately investigated.”
Parklea, which houses maximum and minimum security prisoners, is privately operated by GEO Group Australia.
