Brazilian superstar Joao Moreira will miss his Melbourne Cup ride on the fancied Irish raider Thomas Hobson after plunging to the turf in a heavy fall from his mount Regal Monarch in the Ronald McDonald Charities House Plate, one of the support races earlier on Cup Day.
The Hong Kong based rider, known as the Magic Man for his phenomenal success in Hong Kong and before that Singapore, took a heavy fall after the former English stayer appeared to fall without colliding with any other horse.
Replays suggested the horse went amiss as the field turned into the straight and Moreira tried to pull it up, but it continued before crashing to the ground.
The jockey subsequently got to his feet and walked away into a waiting ambulance.
Stewards have spoken to trainer Willie Mullins and UK-based owner Rich Ricci about finding a replacement.
