An elderly man has been severely burnt after falling while attempting to control a rubbish fire that had been whipped up by sudden winds near Rockhampton.

The 86-year-old man and his wife were burning rubbish when the wind picked up and the fire got out of control, the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue service said in a statement on Saturday.

The man's wife alerted her husband to the blaze but, as he approached, he fell and became "trapped", the rescue service said.

He was severely burnt on more than 50 per cent of his body and has been airlifted to Rockhampton Hospital in a serious condition.
