Maher will make the trip to Scone and inspect some of the yearlings he bought during sales and also has Schism in the Dark Jewel Classic on Saturday.
“I have heard a bit about the meeting and how strong it is and I’m looking forward to my first time at the Scone Cup,” Maher said. “It is an important weekend for the locals and it is a bit like Warrnambool, they all want to win a race, so the pressure is on with Villermont.”
Maher is not concerned about dropping back to 1400m as he has kept Villermont on the fresh side for Saturday but admits his best trip is a mile.
The record at a mile includes his three wins in a Benalla maiden, Sandown Guineas and Gunsynd Classic as well as fourths in the Australian Guineas and Carbine Club Stakes at Randwick, where he was galloped on.
“When you look at his rating he gets into a restricted race for Inglis horses at set weights with a lot of favours,” Maher said. ''He has drawn well and I think he is fresh enough to have some speed in his legs.
