Two men have died after being overcome by fumes while inside a tank on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to Sarina Beach, about 37 kilometres south of Mackay just before 9pm.

Police said the bodies of the two workers, aged 48 and 52, were retrieved from inside one of the two tanks.

A spokesman for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said the two tanks were attached to a prime mover and the victims worked for a haulage company.

He added that investigators were on scene and had impounded the vehicle involved.
