The 30-year-old’s extraordinary back story includes a battle with testicular cancer while studying at university in 2011. Rank said it gave him a dose of perspective that he still uses while refereeing and playing elite amateur golf, having won three straight Canadian mid-amateur titles.

‘‘It probably paved the way to where I am today, just in terms of being mentally stronger,’’ he said.

Baddeley’s fellow Australian Jason Day said his US Open instincts kicked in the minute he arrived at Shinnecock Hills for a measured preparation he hopes will finally deliver victory.
