Keely Small will be the Youth Olympic Games gold medal favourite on Monday morning after qualifying fastest for the 800 metres final.

Small, the Australian team flag bearer in Buenos Aires, was more than one second quicker than the rest of the field, finishing her heat with a time of 2:05.68, with Germany's Sophia Volkmer second in 2:06.92.

St Clare's College student Small is regarded as one of the rising stars of Australian athletics after making her senior team debut at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast earlier this year.

She ran a personal best of 2:00.81 in the heat and set a new under-18 national record to continue an impressive start to her career.

Small finished fifth at the Commonwealth Youth Games last year, and winning gold at the Youth Olympics would set her up for a bid to make the Rio Olympic Games team in 2020.
