Jason Day and family weep after his first pro win in Australia in aftermath of typhoon tragedy

TEARS have been sadly all too prevalent in the Day household this week - but this time they were for the right reasons.

Jason Day's mother Dening, his sisters Kim and Yanna and his nephew were all emotionally drained when they rushed to hug the new World Cup champion after a tumultuous week in which they lost eight family members in the deadly Philippines typhoon.

Dening, who found out on Facebook she'd lost her mother, had a tearful reunion with her son on Saturday morning when she provided him her special "salty chicken" to power his weekend charge.

"The win is the best thing that happened after the disaster in the Philippines. I am so happy it has happened," Dening said.

"I can't imagine (how to describe my feelings). I am speechless. I can't say anything."

Jason's sister Kim could still barely contain the pride she felt in her brother's triumph.

"We know he is good, we know he was able to do it, but it's always scary being here and watching it," Kim said.

"A lot. It's still tough but at least this is a positive thing. Jase said he was doing it for the family."

Kim said there had still been no contact from her family in the worst affected areas of the Philippines, but they hoped to do so in the coming days.
