"I think if Toussaint was to fight Mundine, it would be one-way traffic and Mundine would get knocked out. Whether Mundine has got the balls to step up to the plate, I don’t know, to be honest.

"[Toussaint's promoter] Nick Boutzos has got the capability of putting on a big fight down there and I’d love to see a fight like that happen in Canberra."

Lonergan has a simple answer as to why a southpaw like Toussaint could trouble Mundine. He says the Canberra product is "younger, stronger, fitter, faster".

"Dave has got a lot going for him, his KO percentage is pretty good," Lonergan said.

"I thought David’s performance the other night [against Jackson] was outstanding, and Jackson at best is awkward as all hell, he’s tough.

"Dave has got a bright future and I don’t think Anthony Mundine could go the distance himself with David Toussaint, and that will be reflected in the fact that Mundine probably won’t want to fight him.

"I’ve got real interest in him going forward, he is a great up and coming talent, let’s just wait and see how he goes. I think him versus Mundine will be a great fight and I think Nick Boutzos is the right man to put it on in Canberra."

Toussaint is building up towards his first Australian title defence at an upcoming Capital Fight Show event in August but the chance to take on Mundine would launch him towards bigger things.

The unbeaten 26-year-old has won two Australasian straps - at middleweight and super middleweight - and says Mundine will have to go through the best in Australia for another shot on the world stage.

"I’m the Australian champion so I consider myself the best middleweight in Australia," Toussaint said.

"He’s probably one of the biggest names in Australian boxing and one of the best athletes we’ve seen in a long time. It would be a great opportunity to fight him.
