A FIERY and controversial first half has ended in first-placed Melbourne leading second-placed Sydney Roosters by four at AAMI Park.

Storm captain Cameron Smith reacted with bewilderment when a long-range try by winger Josh Addo Carr was called back for a shepherd in the home side's own quarter at one stage.

And earlier, Melbourne's other winger Suiliasi Vunivalu was awarded a rare penalty try when he was taken out by Latrell Mitchell while chasing a kick. There was also a flare-up when Mitchell shoulder-charged Will Chambers.
