Nick Columb, who has the final say for the HKJC, said it was very hard to get the horse you wanted at the right price.
“It is what I would call an unrealistic market,” Columb said. “When horses are being passed in at $800,000 to me, it becomes a little bit difficult to work out what is value, and what is not.
“We would have liked to pay less for (lot 223) but this is the market we are playing in and we need to have quality Australian-bred horses in our sale and he is one of a handful we have selected.
“We don’t buy with a machine gun, we buy with a rifle, so we target certain horses and we have to hit occasionally.”
Later in the afternoon, HKJC paid $900,000 for a Snitzel colt out of Miss Sharapova from the Arrowfield draft.
