"If not, there are mile races like the Makybe Diva Sakes, which are good options. He is definitely a quality horse."

Poetic Dream was backed from $7 to $4.80 at Ladbrokes when markets opened on the Aurie’s Star Handicap, with Voodoo Lad a $3.90 favourite in front of Godolphin import Home Of The Brave, which has impressed in Sydney barrier trials, at $4.

Hayes already has Vega Magic, runner-up in the Everest last year, in the $13 million sprint at Randwick on October 13. He will have to defend his Memsie Stakes title later in the month before running the James Harron slot in The Everest.

"We are sticking with what worked with him last year, run in the Memsie and then freshen up into the Everest," Hayes said. "He went so close to winning it, so we know it works. He came through that first-up win really well and we are happy with him."
