Gas explosion fears after trucks crash on North West Coast Highway

North West Coast Highway in the Pilbara has been closed in both directions near Nanutarra amid explosion fears after a truck carrying LNG gas crashed with another truck on Monday night.

Superintendent Garry Kosovich said a 2.6 kilometre exclusion zone was set up to protect the public after one of the trailers fom the tanker truck detached and caught on fire in the crash that happened about 8:30pm.

The situation was all the more dangerous with a large bushfire burning nearby but the Department of Fire and emergency services said there was no threat to the community.

The tanker truck was carrying about 31 tonnes of gas and emergency services and police officers from Onslow and Exmouth are managing the crash scene.

Traffic is being detained at Nanutarra Road House to avoid traffic from banking up and keep people near facilities.

It's understood both drivers sustained minor injuries and no other persons were involved in the incident.
