Police have located a 33-year-old prison escapee just three hours after he fled from corrective services custody on Tuesday afternoon.

WA Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said officers had found Johnathan Fraser Sedman at around 5.30pm, and had taken him back into custody.

"Police no longer need assistance to locate the Holden Commodore. At this stage, no further information will be released for operational reasons."

Mr Sedman was being escorted by prison guards at Fremantle Hospital at around 2.20pm when a white sedan pulled up alongside them inside the hospital car park on Alma Street.

A man got out of the sedan and police said he appeared to be carrying a firearm.

The man helped Sedman escape, while a woman is believed to have been driving the car.

The vehicle involved was a white 2010 Holden Commodore sedan, registration 1DYT 612.

It is understood Sedman was an inmate at Casuarina Prison, and is believed to have been involved in a series of armed robberies in Perth in the mid-2000s.
