Fire breaks out at Sydney scrap metal yard

Fire crews are on the scene of an "escalating" blaze at a metal recycling depot in St Marys.

It's believed the fire broke out just before 2pm on Thursday afternoon, when a large pile of cars caught alight.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said six crews had arrived at the Christie Street depot, with another six on the way.

The spokesman said the inferno had been contained to one pile of vehicles, and heavy machinery was being used to separate it.

The spokesperson said it was estimated the depot held about 500 tonnes of scrap metal.
