The Darren Weir-trained Fifty Stars made it six wins from eight career starts when he stepped up to group 3 company to win the 1500-metre Sandown Stakes.
But the Ben Allen-ridden galloper's triumph was not enough to book himself a ticket to Perth next week after Weir decided a couple of hours after the race not to send him to Western Australia for the Railway Stakes, a group 1 contest for which bookmakers had him among the market leaders.
The lightly-raced four-year-old son of Sea The Stars, the English Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, has enormous promise and the trainer is sure to find plenty of improvement in the horse, who will certainly strengthen and mature in the coming months.
"Its a busy enough time for him. Come here, race, go back to Ballarat, come back tomorrow, get on a plane and get over there, then you have five days to settle in and then you have to race again, so it's not easy," Weir had said before deciding not to travel.
