The Canberra triathlete who couldn't swim

The swimming part of the triathlon journey would only start in 2011, where she took a leap of faith.

"A friend had sent me a flyer for her club’s novice program that was about to start and I thought, 'Yeah, why not? I’ll give it a go, I’ve got no good reason not to do it,' despite the fact that I couldn’t swim," Gurnhill said.

"I just wanted to build up a little bit of confidence swimming in the lake. I was feeling good heading back into the shore and there were two water police on jetskis coming and chasing me from behind.

"A passerby had alerted the police that there was a distressed swimmer in the lake and they had come to rescue me."

You wouldn't have blamed her if her time in the sport ended then, but she stuck at it and took part in her first triathlon the following weekend.
