Brisbanites will have to dust off their oscillating fans ahead of schedule with soaring temperatures set to melt any illusion that it is still winter.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting temperatures to reach the high 20s next week with a maximum of 30C predicted for Wednesday and Thursday.

While those estimates are seven degrees above the average for August, meteorologist James Thompson said it did not count as a heatwave as the city would still have cool nights below 20C.

Mr Thompson said the current warmer weather was being caused by north westerly winds from the centre of Queensland and was likely too dry to cause any storms.

A cool change through the end of the week should bring relief with a maximum of 24C forecast for Saturday.
